Discover First Growth Bordeaux Wines with Benchmark Wine Group

Some wines sit at the very top of the Bordeaux world. These wines are known as the First Growths, and for many collectors they form the foundation of a serious cellar.

First Growth Bordeaux wines come from five historic estates that have shaped the reputation of the region for more than a century. Their wines are known for balance, structure, and the ability to age for decades.

Collectors often look to these estates when they want to experience the highest level of Bordeaux. Recently, Benchmark Wine Group had the chance to explore this legacy during a private Château Margaux dinner in Sarasota, where several vintages were poured side by side.

The 1855 Bordeaux Classification

The idea of First Growth Bordeaux began in 1855. Napoleon III asked for a ranking of Bordeaux wines for the Paris Exposition in Paris.

Wine merchants created a list of the top estates based on reputation and price. At the time, price often reflected quality and demand. The best estates were placed in the highest category, known as Premier Cru, or First Growth.

Four estates received this top rank:

  • Château Lafite Rothschild
  • Château Latour
  • Château Margaux
  • Château Haut-Brion

For more than a century, these four estates remained at the top of the classification.

In 1973, one important change took place. Château Mouton Rothschild was officially promoted to First Growth status after many years of recognition for its quality. Today, the five estates together form the group known as First Growth Bordeaux.

The Five First Growth Bordeaux Estates

Each First Growth estate has its own history and style. Yet all five produce wines that collectors around the world seek.

Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is located in Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Known for wines that show elegance, balance, and long aging potential.

Many vintages develop slowly in the cellar and can age for decades. Over time, the wines often show notes of cedar, tobacco, and dark fruit.

Château Latour

The Château Latour also sits in Pauillac and is known for power and structure. The wines often show deep concentration and firm tannins when young.

Because of this structure, Latour can age for many decades. With time, the wines develop complexity and depth that collectors admire.

Château Margaux

Château Margaux is often associated with elegance and perfume. The wines show silky textures and beautiful aromatics.

Collectors value Margaux for its balance and finesse. Even powerful vintages often retain a sense of grace and harmony.

Château Mouton Rothschild

Known for rich and expressive wines. The estate also has a famous tradition of commissioning artists to design each vintage label.

The wines often show bold fruit and strong Pauillac character. Over time, they gain complexity while still keeping their vibrant style.

Château Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion stands apart from the others because it sits outside the Médoc in Pessac Léognan. Despite its location, it was included in the original 1855 ranking.

The wines of Haut-Brion often show deep complexity with earthy, smoky notes. Many collectors admire the estate for its distinctive character and remarkable aging ability.

Why Collectors Seek First Growth Bordeaux

Collectors value First Growth Bordeaux for several reasons.

First, the estates have long histories of quality. Their vineyards and winemaking teams have produced exceptional wines for many generations.

Second, these wines age extremely well. Many bottles continue to evolve for thirty years or more, which makes them ideal for long term cellaring.

Third, the wines hold strong recognition around the world. Collectors often view them as essential bottles in a Bordeaux focused cellar.

Finally, First Growth wines represent some of the most famous vineyards in the world. For many wine lovers, tasting these bottles offers a direct connection to the history of Bordeaux.

The Role of Provenance

When buying First Growth Bordeaux, provenance is very important. Proper storage and careful handling help preserve the quality of these wines over time.

That being said collectors often look for bottles that have been stored professionally and handled with care throughout their life.

Benchmark Wine Group carefully inspects every bottle before it reaches a collector’s cellar. Each wine is backed by the Benchmark Wine Group Provenance Guarantee, ensuring authenticity, condition, and confidence for collectors.

Building a Bordeaux Cellar

For many collectors, First Growth Bordeaux forms the top tier of a cellar. These wines sit alongside other important estates from the region and often become the centerpiece of long term collections.

Some collectors build verticals of specific estates. Others focus on important vintages from multiple First Growth producers.

No matter the approach, these wines continue to represent the highest level of Bordeaux winemaking.

The Legacy of First Growth Bordeaux

More than 150 years after the 1855 Classification, First Growth Bordeaux still defines the top of the region.

The five estates continue to produce wines that combine history, vineyard character, and careful winemaking. For collectors, they remain some of the most respected and recognizable wines in the world.

Whether enjoyed today or aged for decades, First Growth Bordeaux continues to set the standard for what great Bordeaux can be.
